On Friday of last week Massively—a website featuring news and editorials on the MMO genre— officially announced that the closing of its virtual doors would be on February 3, 2015. I have been visiting this site for a little over a year now, checking regularly every day for updates, and the news of its closure was disheartening to say the least. I’ve grown fond of the individual voices of the writers on staff and was saddened at the prospect of no longer being able to read their work and consequently be removed from the general happenings in the MMO world.
I wrote the following poem as a response to the news and posted it the following day in “The Daily Grind,” a daily discussion prompt posted every morning by the staff. I thought it would be appropriate to post it on my blog today when the doors officially close.
I watched a good friend bravely die today,
Defiantly resigned she breathed her last.
Her words persist though in a coffin lay,
Marking a time presently in the past.
What next (a weary sigh) I cannot see;
But drink I shall, and toast dear Massively.
Then again, maybe I was wrong. Maybe there are a few stories left to be told and we’ll see the writing staff pick up the sword and board of gaming journalism once again. I mean, I knew they were all capable of handling the most arduous of raid bosses in game, but who knew that when the corporate giant that is AOL left them for dead they would prove to be so MassivelyOverpowered and fight back?
